LAKE WORTH — With school starting this week, city commissioners invited Erica Whitfield, a District 4 Palm Beach County School Board member, to speak at tonight’s meeting.
Whitfield said the district is focusing on creating a positive school climate.
“We want our students to come to our schools and be the best person they can be,” she said.
She also noted how the district will be looking at breaking down between different ethnicities and how they perform on tests.
“We hadn’t really looked at that.” Whitfield said. “We have to tackle these problems head on.”
Whitfield said Lake Worth High School has struggled with graduation rates, but the school has shown recent improvement.
In 2012, the school had a 71 percent graduation rate. That number increased to 75 percent last year.
“The numbers are actually going up,” Whitfield said.
